You’re probably rolling your eyes already.

Afterall, it seems like every accountant and his dog has a newsletter now—why should I bother?

Well the truth is it’s not easy to start or consistently write (yours truly included).

However once you develop a habit its rewards are phenomenal.

A newsletter can boost your standing as a trusted authority, especially for entrepreneurial accountants.

And it can be an excellent source of additional revenue.

For example I recently began charging a $500 per day per ad sponsorship (to keep this newsletter free for y’all).

Assuming that I only book half my available spots that comes to $130K/yr ($500 × 2 ad spots x 260 weekdays / 2).

$260,000 if I sell out all spots or increase the fee as this publication steadily grows.

There’s money in them thar hills! 🤑

Like a well-oiled machine, with AI models like ChatGPT, newsletter creation becomes an automatable process and gets better the more you fine tune it.

Today, I'm unveiling my own 8-step strategy that seamlessly integrates ChatGPT into my newsletter workflow. Let's dive in.

Step 1: Construct an AI-enhanced Idea Vault

In your quest for topic generation, ChatGPT can be your research assistant. Start with a solid prompt then and ask it to generate subtopics or prompt it to explore trending accounting issues. This AI-powered brainstorming will ensure your idea vault remains evergreen.

Example ChatGPT Prompt:
I run a [practice type]. Give me 5 ideas for a weekly newsletter that would provide tremendous value to my clients and prospects in my [accounting niche]. For idea idea create three compelling subject line recommendations.

[practice type] = 100% remote accounting and tax practice
[accounting niche] = tech startups

Step 2: Deep Dive into Research with AI

With your topic ready, leverage ChatGPT to develop content to your chosen topic. AI-powered research will save you time and provide rich, varied perspectives for your readers. (See my video below for how to shortcut this step).

Step 3: Draft a Template with AI

A consistent template is the skeleton of your newsletter. You can ask ChatGPT to generate a newsletter structure based on your preferences. For instance, instruct it to create sections like:

1. The Problem

2. Common Solutions

3. Their Shortcomings

4. Our Unique Solution

5. Action Steps for Tech Startups

This template ensures you consistently deliver problem-solving content to your readers.

Step 4: Generate Engaging Headers with AI

Now chose the best article idea and subject line from Step #1. The prompt we used in ChatGPT generated 5 article ideas with 3 subject lines each. You now have 15 AI-generated ideas to choose from!

Step 5: Flesh Out Your Newsletter with AI

Now that you have your chosen subject and outline from your template you’re ready to flesh out your content. Use the following prompt:

Example ChatGPT Prompt:
Now write a 500 word newsletter article based on the subject "Avoid Common Tax Pitfalls - Save Thousands as a Tech Startup". Use the following five sections:

1. The Problem

2. Common Solutions

3. Their Shortcomings

4. Our Unique Solution

5. Action Steps for Tech Startups

This AI-assisted writing ensures you deliver clear, comprehensive, and actionable information.

Step 6: Embed Visuals and Research

Include the research gathered earlier and request ChatGPT to suggest relevant visuals, like infographics, that could bolster your points. A blend of AI-guided research and visuals can keep your readers engaged and your newsletter dynamic.

For example I use the AI image generation tool MidJourney to create original royalty-free images. I literally load up the app and type in exactly what image I want it to generate including my favorite watercolor art style:

Pro Tip: You don’t have to get this fancy in the beginning. Just use Unsplash to grab royal-free images (unlimited for free).

Step 7: Craft a Captivating Title with AI

The title of your newsletter can be a make-or-break factor in garnering high open rates. We already generated a subject line in Step #1 now let’s ask it once again just to make sure its the best.

Example ChatGPT Prompt:
Now give me 3 more compelling subject line ideas based on this article.

Step 8: Commit to Thorough AI-assisted Editing

Lastly, use ChatGPT to finalize. You can ask it to make your article longer or shorter or even write in the tone of someone else.

Creating a premium accounting newsletter may appear challenging, but with these comprehensive, ChatGPT-assisted steps, it saves you hours. No need to be a world-class writer.

If you haven't started yet, create your idea vault using Trello (ClickUp is another favorite), then use ChatGPT to populate it with 2-3 ideas every day. If you already have one, leverage ChatGPT to create a consistent template for your newsletter.
